What is Bamboo Flooring?

Bamboo floors are made from a type of grass (bamboo), and yet are harder and more durable than timber floors. Bamboo floor has an elegant natural beauty and superior durability, making this style of flooring an increasingly popular choice amongst Sydney homeowners.

Bamboo grass grows in abundance and faster than its tree counterparts, enabling it to become a more affordable and environmentally-friendly alternative to traditional hardwood flooring products.

Quality bamboo flooring products are made from bamboo stalks from dedicated plantations that produce a unique grain pattern and can come in various colours. After the manufacturing process, bamboo products typically come in long and wide boards that can be used for your entire floor. Natural bamboo flooring comes from a renewable resource, so it’s eco-friendly and can increase your real estate value.

Their only drawback is water and moisture – however, we have a new waterproof bamboo floor that removes this risk entirely!

Bamboo flooring is great in many ways – it’s a more affordable and durable alternative to timber flooring. It’s harder to scratch on the surface than most hardwoods and also offers an elegant natural and quality look. The main drawback of bamboo flooring is that it doesn’t go well with water – so you must be careful in high-moisture areas of the home if you don’t choose from our waterproof range.

Advantages of Bamboo Flooring:

  • Durability – Bamboo flooring is extremely durable, even more so than the strongest hardwoods. Strandwoven bamboo floors have a Janka Rating around 15.0.
  • Healthy – Bamboo flooring is a natural product which has minimal volatile organic compound emissions (VOCs). We only stock ranges with emissions below the stringent E0 ratings.
  • Sustainable – Bamboo flooring is environmentally sustainable, as the grass plant reaches maturity in only 7 years as opposed to hardwoods which take up to 80 years.
  • Can Be Waterproof – Newer HydroPro Bamboo offers a 100% waterproof core. You can now have these laid in splash areas!

Disadvantages of Bamboo Flooring:

  • Water – Bamboo flooring is not waterproof. This means you will need to take care in wiping up spills to protect the beautiful floors.
  • Warping – Bamboo flooring is very dense which is great for durability, but it also makes them more susceptible to warping from moisture or temperature changes.

HydroPro Bamboo flooring uses a 100% waterproof core which means you can now have bamboo flooring without worrying about spills or moisture! This feature is unique to the HydroPro brand, which means other bamboo flooring ranges don’t share this feature.

Solid bamboo flooring is not waterproof. Most bamboo floors have some level of water resistance because they have a wax seal, helping keep water out. However, care must be taken to wipe up spills immediately.

Pro Tips to Maintain Bamboo Flooring:

  1. Choose a waterproof or water-resistant bamboo floor from the beginning.
  2. Use a doormat at entrances to keep out water, grime and dirt.
  3. Do not install bamboo flooring in wet areas like kitchens (unless suitable).
  4. Use a slightly damp mop when cleaning and never flood the floors with water.

Proper care in cleaning and maintaining your bamboo floors will keep them beautiful for many years to come.

Floating floors are flooring that can be installed on top of a subfloor without nails or glue. This makes floating timber floors suitable for apartments and units and reduces the time and cost of installation. Bamboo flooring is a floating floor and a way of getting natural flooring into your apartment.

Advantages of Floating Floors:

  1. Floating floors are quicker to install than direct-stick counterparts.
  2. Floating floors are cheaper to install than direct-stick counterparts.
  3. Floating floor installations are more suited for apartments as it does not require the loud banging of nails into the floor.
  4. Floating floors are much easier to repair than direct-stick counterparts.
